Michael Jackson’s relationship with traditional Christianity was complex, evolving from a strict upbringing as a Jehovah’s Witness to a more personal and private spirituality in his later years.
1. Upbringing as a Jehovah’s Witness
Michael was raised as a devout Jehovah’s Witness by his mother, Katherine Jackson. Unlike mainstream Christianity, Jehovah’s Witnesses reject the Trinity and the divinity of Jesus, viewing him as a created being rather than God.
During his youth and the height of his Thriller fame, Michael was a practicing member who took “field service” seriously. His sister, La Toya Jackson, recalled in her memoir, Growing Up in the Jackson Family, that he famously wore disguises like hats and fake mustaches to go door-to-door in Los Angeles, noting that “adults were easily fooled by Michael incognito, but it was a rare child who didn’t see through his costume in seconds.”
However, his faith often clashed with his art. The elders of his church criticized the “Thriller” music video for its occult themes, leading Michael to add a disclaimer to the beginning of the film stating: “Due to my strong personal convictions, I wish to stress that this film in no way endorses a belief in the occult.”
2. Departure from the Organization (1987)
In 1987, Michael officially disassociated himself from the Jehovah’s Witnesses. The split was largely due to the church’s strict rules and their disapproval of his music, dance moves, and public image. A representative from his Woodland Hills congregation confirmed to the Los Angeles Times at the time that “Jackson had ‘disassociated’ himself from the church and no longer wished to be known as a Jehovah’s Witness.” After leaving, he no longer adhered to their specific prohibitions, such as the ban on celebrating birthdays and holidays.
3. Later Spiritual Beliefs
After 1987, Jackson described his faith as more personal and less tied to a specific denomination. He frequently mentioned reading the Bible daily and praying before performances. In his 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey, he explained his spiritual philosophy by saying, “I try to imitate Jesus in the fact that he said to be like children, to love children, to be as pure as children, and to make yourself as innocent and to see the world through eyes of wonder.”
While there was significant speculation about his interest in other religions—including Islam, which his brother Jermaine encouraged—Michael also maintained a deep respect for Catholicism, famously visiting the Vatican and meeting with various religious leaders.
4. Reported Deathbed Conversion
One of the most discussed claims regarding his faith came after his death in 2009. Close friends and collaborators, including music producer Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, claimed that Michael had “accepted Christ” approximately two weeks before he passed away. Jerkins later shared that he was told by those present, “Michael received Christ two weeks ago… he had us pray with him, he did the sinner’s prayer.”
While the Jackson estate has never officially confirmed a formal conversion, gospel singer Sandra Crouch confirmed that she and her brother, Andraé Crouch, met with Michael shortly before his death to discuss music and spirituality. She noted, “We sang together, prayed together and had a wonderful time… We explained to him about the anointing of the Holy Spirit and Jesus and he gladly joined us in prayer.”
