The Spy Mission

Imagine you’re about to move to a new place, but first, you send some friends to check it out. That’s what happened in our story! God told Moses to send 12 spies to explore Canaan, the land He promised to give the Israelites after their amazing escape from Egypt.

Numbers 13 to 14

The spies obeyed and spent 40 days exploring the land. When they came back, they brought amazing fruit with them. They all agreed the land was awesome, just like God said it would be!

The Big Problem

But then, something went wrong. Ten of the spies got really scared. They said, “The people living there are huge and strong! We look like grasshoppers compared to them!” Can you imagine feeling that small?

Grasshoppers in the Bible

Only two spies, Joshua and Caleb, had faith. They said, “Don’t be afraid! God is with us. We can defeat them!” They remembered how powerful God is and how He’d helped them before.

Sadly, the other Israelites ignored Joshua and Caleb and chose to listen to the scared spies. They were so afraid that they forgot all about God’s power and how He’d saved them from slavery in Egypt. Instead of trusting Him, they started crying and complaining. Some even wanted to go back to being slaves!

God’s response

The Israelites let their fear win, and God was upset. He had already done so much for them—freeing them from Egypt, parting the Red Sea, and all sorts of other miracles. But now, when it really counted, they didn’t trust Him.

So, God made a tough decision: He said that none of the adults who doubted would enter the Promised Land. Instead, they would walk around the desert for 40 years until they passed away. Among them, only Joshua and Caleb, the two spies who had faith, would live to enjoy the land.

What can we learn?

The Bible teaches us a big lesson here: Fear can make us miss out on the amazing things God has planned for us. The Israelites were so focused on the giants that they forgot how powerful God really is. They let fear control them, and because of that, they missed their chance.

Joshua and Caleb, however, didn’t let fear stop them. They believed that God was bigger than any giant, and because of that, they were the only ones from their generation who made it into the Promised Land. Joshua even led a new and younger group of Israelites into Canaan, showing that faith in God really does lead to victory.

Trust God

So, what can we learn from this? Well, sometimes, life throws us some pretty scary stuff—big challenges that seem impossible to overcome. But like Joshua and Caleb, we need to remember that God is always with us. If He’s on our side, there’s no reason to be afraid. When we choose faith over fear, we open the door to the amazing things God has for us.

Questions to Ask Yourself

  1. When faced with something scary, do you focus more on the size of the problem or the power of God?
  2. Are there any ‘giant’ struggles in your life that you need to trust God to help you overcome?
  3. How can you be more like Joshua and Caleb, choosing faith over fear in your everyday decisions?
