How to Be Still Before God: 3 Simple Steps

I think, in our super busy world, it’s all too easy to forget how crucial it is to slow down and just be still before God (Psalm 46:10).

To me, being still before our Lord means taking the time to quiet our minds, open our hearts, and focus on His presence and power. It’s also about creating a space where we can listen, reflect, and grow closer to Him.

Be still before God

This doesn’t need to be hard or complicated – but it does take some practice and a genuine desire to draw closer to God.

Here are three simple tips that I hope will help you get started:

1. Set Aside Regular ‘Quiet Time’

The first step is to make time for stillness. It doesn’t have to be hours – even 10 to 15 minutes a day can make a big difference in the long run. Many believers call this their “quiet time” with God.

Choose a time that works best for you, whether it’s early morning, after lunch, or before you head to bed. The key here is consistency. Try to stick to your chosen time every day, making it a habit. Of course, you’ll sometimes need to adjust your schedule a little – but do your best to dedicate those minutes daily.

Making time for God

Don’t let busyness become an excuse. Even Jesus, who had the most important ministry work ever, made time to go away to quiet places to pray (Luke 5:16).

This focused time shows God that you truly value your relationship with Him.

2. Worship and Thanksgiving

When you begin your quiet time, focus on who God is – our Creator, full of love, power, and kindness.

A great way to do this is by reading Bible verses about God’s character. For example, Psalm 100:4 says, “Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name.” Verses like this remind us to approach God with a thankful heart.

Thanksgiving

You can also worship by singing or listening to worship songs, or simply tell God what you appreciate about Him. Take a moment to thank Him for the blessings in your life, both big and small. Gratitude shifts your focus from your problems to God’s faithfulness.

By focusing on worship and thanksgiving, you can quiet your heart and mind, making it easier to be still before God and feel His presence.

3. Listen More, Talk Less

When we pray, we often spend a lot of time telling God our needs and wants. While this is important, it’s just as crucial, in the right moments, to speak less, be still, and wait as you listen for His response (James 1:19).

So, during your time of worship and thanksgiving, take a few moments to quiet your mind. Gently let go of your thoughts, biases, and preferences, allowing the noise in your head to settle.

Hear His voice

As you do this, give God space to speak in whatever way He chooses – whether through His Word, peace, a vision, an impression, or something else. Let the Holy Spirit guide you as you calm yourself before Him.

Be open to what God wants to say. At first, it might be hard to know if it’s His voice or just your own thoughts, and that’s okay. The main goal for now is to make room to be still before Him.

With time, faith, practice, and patience, you’ll begin to recognize His voice more clearly – like a close friend. This is one of the fruits of being still before God.

Speak less, hear more

Conclusion

Being still before God means taking time to quiet your mind, worship, and listen to Him. It might be tough at first, but with practice and patience, it will get easier and bring many rewards.

When you make space for stillness, you grow closer to God and let Him guide you in everything in your life. It’s truly worth it!
