What Can We Learn from Jesus’ Healing at the Pool of Bethesda?

There are many lessons we can learn from Jesus healing the man at the pool of Bethesda. But our main takeaway today is this: our focus should always be on Jesus.

In this Bible story (John 5), a man had been disabled for 38 years. He couldn’t walk and had been lying by the pool, hoping for a miracle. People believed the pool had healing powers – but only for the first person who entered when the water was stirred by an angel.

Healing Bible Story

Because of his condition, the man was never fast enough to make it in. He was left waiting, watching others go in, while he remained stuck in his suffering.

Then Jesus arrived, and He simply asked the man, “Do you want to get well?”

The man responded by explaining why he couldn’t be healed—he had no one to help him into the pool, and he wasn’t able to make it on his own. Rather than focus on Jesus, the man was fixated on the pool and on needing others.

But Jesus wasn’t interested in the pool. Instead, He simply said, “Get up, pick up your mat, and walk.” – and instantly, the man was healed.

Jesus is our true source of healing

The man found out that his healing didn’t come from the pool, from his own effort, or from depending on other people. His healing came straight from Jesus.

He is healed

🤔 In short, this Bible story is about physical healing, but it actually teaches us a much bigger lesson.

We all need healing in different ways. It’s not only about our bodies. It can be emotional, like when we’re feeling broken or anxious. It can also be spiritual, like when we feel lost or far from God.

✞ Here’s the most important part: When we’re struggling, we often try to fix things ourselves or depend entirely on others, just like the man at the pool of Bethesda. We might also focus on the things we think will help us – but totally overlook the One who can truly heal us.

Now, to be clear, it’s good to seek help—from doctors, counselors, or friends. God can use these people to help us heal. But John 5 reminds us that true healing always comes from Jesus Himself. No matter what kind of healing we need, Jesus is the one and the source we should ultimately put our hope in.

So, the next time you’re in need of healing of any kind, remember to turn your eyes to Jesus. Jesus is and will always be the answer.
