Where is this parable found?
Luke 16:1–9. Jesus told this parable to His disciples, with the Pharisees also listening. He spoke to people who cared deeply about money and status, using this story to challenge how they understood faithfulness, wisdom, and eternal priorities.
Summary
A rich man discovered that his manager was wasting his possessions and decided to fire him. Knowing he was about to lose his job and had no future security, the manager acted quickly. He called in his master’s debtors and reduced their debts so they would be grateful to him later.
When the master learned what the manager had done, he surprisingly praised him—not for being dishonest, but for being shrewd and decisive. Jesus then used this moment to teach His listeners about wisdom, stewardship, and preparing for what truly matters beyond this life.
What does this parable mean?
Jesus uses the characters in the parable as analogies to teach spiritual truth. Understanding who represents what helps the message become clear:
- The rich man represents God
God is the true owner of everything. All resources, opportunities, and responsibilities ultimately belong to Him. - The manager represents people, especially believers
Like the manager, we are entrusted with things that are not ours—money, time, abilities, influence, and life itself. - The manager’s dismissal points to accountability
Just as the manager had to give an account, every person will one day answer to God for how they lived and what they did with what they were given. - The manager’s quick action shows awareness and urgency
Once he realized his position was ending, he acted decisively. Jesus highlights this awareness, not his dishonesty. - The reduced debts show using resources to secure future relationships
The manager used temporary wealth to prepare for what came next. Jesus uses this as a contrast, teaching that believers should use earthly resources to invest in eternal outcomes. - The master’s praise affirms wisdom, not wrongdoing
The rich man praised the manager’s shrewd thinking, not his unethical behavior. In the same way, God values wise, intentional stewardship rooted in truth.
Jesus’ main point is this: if people act decisively for their temporary future, how much more should God’s people live wisely with eternity in mind. The parable calls believers to wake up, live intentionally, and steward God’s gifts with faithfulness and love.

- Remember that you are a steward, not an owner—everything you have belongs to God
- Use money, time, and influence to bless others and reflect God’s love
