You’ve probably heard Christians talk about having a “spirit of excellence.” But what does that really mean?
A spirit of excellence means doing your best in everything to honor God, not to show off or earn praise. It’s about working hard, being faithful, and putting your heart into your work, studies, relationships, and service to others.
This also includes having good character—being honest, kind, and dependable.
However, a spirit of excellence is not about trying to be perfect or stressing about mistakes. Rather, it’s about doing your best with a good attitude, simply because you want to serve God out of your love for Him.
Bible Verses on Excellence
While the Bible doesn’t use the exact phrase “spirit of excellence,” many verses indeed teach us about what it means to do our best for God.
In Colossians 3:23-24, we are told to do everything with our whole heart as if we’re doing it for God, not just for people. This means that whatever we do, big or small, whether at school, home, or church, should be done to please God.
Daniel 6:3 shows how Daniel stood out because he had an “excellent spirit”. He tried to be dedicated and faithful in everything he did. We can learn from his example by being trustworthy and hardworking in our own lives.
Proverbs 22:29 teaches that those who are skilled and work hard are soon noticed and rewarded. By focusing on doing our best for Him, we open the door to greater opportunities that can bring even more glory to God.
Applying a Spirit of Excellence Today
Here’s one example of how you can apply a spirit of excellence in your own life.
Let’s say you’re part of your church’s committee, and you’ve been asked to help organize a community service event. This is how you could apply a spirit of excellence:
- Plan ahead and think through details carefully.
- Communicate clearly with your team and those you’re serving.
- Show up on time and ready to work.
- Treat everyone with kindness and respect.
- Clean up thoroughly when you’re done.
By doing these things, you’re not just organizing an event—you’re showing God’s love through your actions and attitude. This spirit of excellence can be applied in all we do, reflecting our desire to honor Him in every aspect of our lives.
It’s Not About Perfection
Again, remember, God sees your heart and values your sincere efforts more than flawless results. He’s not looking for perfection, but for a willing and devoted heart.
Trying to be perfect can sometimes turn into a form of pride, where we start to focus more on ourselves than on really serving God. It’s good to do our best, but we should always keep our eyes on doing our best out of our love for God and others. That is what it means to have a spirit of excellence.
Questions to Ask Yourself
- Am I focusing on doing my best for God, or am I trying to be perfect to impress others?
- How can I show a spirit of excellence in the small tasks I do each day?
- Do I approach my work and relationships with a heart that honours God, even when no one is watching?
